Consumer Unit Upgrade — your questions answered
- How long is the power off for a consumer unit upgrade?
- Usually four to six hours across a single day. The electrician will agree a start time so you can plan around fridges and home working.
- Do I need to upgrade my fuse board?
- If you still have rewireable fuses, no RCD protection, or an EICR has coded the board, an upgrade is the standard fix.
- Is a consumer unit upgrade notifiable?
- Yes. It is notifiable work under Part P and must be certified by a registered electrician — your certificate is your proof.
- Will existing faults add to the cost?
- Sometimes. A board change exposes pre-existing circuit faults, so a good electrician tests first and tells you before doing extra work.
